The romantic lure of Island life is alive and well just off the coast of Essex. Mersea Island, nestled between the river Blackwater and Colne estuaries is approximately nine miles south-east of Colchester, and is without doubt one of the county's best kept secrets.

The island is approximately five miles by two miles, and has a perimeter of twelve miles encompassing the town of West Mersea and the village of East Mersea. The name is a derivation of the Anglo Saxon word ‘Meresig’, which dates from the early 10th Century and means 'island of the pool'.

The quest for allotments continues! The Mersea Island Allotment and Leisure Gardeners Association committee are tirelessly working to secure an area of land on Mersea that can be leased to provide allotments for the community. Mersea Island Food, Drink & Leisure Festival - 23rd & 24th May 2009

The Mersea Island Food, Drink & Leisure Festival 2009 will take place on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th May from 11am to 5pm at Mersea Island Vineyard, Rewsalls Lane, East Mersea, CO5 8SX. A fun day out for all the family, there will be food and drink tastings, art and craft demonstrations, performances by local bands, dancers and performers and lots of creative activities for children. Admission and parking are free.
